No network or the internet is too slow? Salzburg's radio and data connections are not equally good everywhere. This year, the winter road clearance staff are therefore on a double mission: clearing the streets and, at the same time, uncovering wireless and data gaps. The result should be a map that shows exactly where broadband coverage needs to be improved.
This project is a perfect example of how to use synergies between the state's departments: the vehicles of the winter road clearance service (State Construction Directorate) take the box with them on their tours of duty and provide important data for broadband expansion (Department of Livelihoods and Energy). Inconspicuous and wired, the orange box lies there as Hannes Hinterberger concentrated on his route through Mauerndorf (Lungau) with the Schmidt Combi Soliq, ensuring ice-free roads with the scattered brine. In this snowy winter, quite a few kilometres have been covered; the measuring boxes have so far been on the road in Flachgau, Pongau, Tennengau and currently in Lungau. "Very important findings, because we want to have a reliable data connection throughout the country. This is enormously important for the people and their work in the rural areas," said Provincial Councillor Josef Schwaiger (ÖVP).

Three measuring boxes are in use on the provincial roads, 50,000 kilometres they were on the road in the cockpit of the clearing vehicles, in March it is still the turn of the Pinzgau. "A very large amount of data is collected, because a measurement takes place every second. With the findings, we can create a map of Salzburg that shows exactly where the mobile phone and data connection still needs improvement," explain project manager Peter Dorfinger and Fabian Prudky, broadband coordinator of the province of Salzburg.
Good connection in SalzburgA look at maps that have already been created immediately shows: black areas along the state roads still have some catching up to do, while there is a good connection in the green ones. The scan should be ready in early summer, and it will then be the basis for talks with the mobile phone providers. "92 per cent of Salzburg has a good connection, we are in a better position than Vienna, for example, although we have a mountainous topography. By 2020, however, we want to be even better, especially to connect the rural regions even better with the rest of the world," says Provincial Councillor Schwaiger.
