From the family farm to a full-fledged manufacturer

When Eskil Swenson started Swenson Products in 1937, then known as Cherry Valley Pulverizer Company, he had no idea it would grow to the manufacturing company it is today! Back then, he worked on everything himself on his family farm, including their first twin roller chain drive spreader, which was used primarily in agriculture.

The company moved to its present-day location of Lindenwood, Illinois in 1939, occupying a blacksmith shop just north of its present-day plant. For the next 23 years, their primary product was the Swenson Chain Drive Spreader, but when hydraulic drive systems started to appear on trucks in the early 60’s, Swenson followed the technology and introduced their first hydraulic spreader as well. Over the next few years, several new spreader models were launched, with Eskil Swenson holding many of the original patents. Prior to 1967, the controls in all trucks were manually operated, but that changed when the concept of controlled spreading was introduced by Swenson. This implementation has saved millions of tons of salt and granular materials during the winter season and has led to cleaner highways and waterways.
