You could almost say it was an early Christmas present! Just in time for the beginning of the meteorological winter, the municipal utility has leased a new vehicle for the building yard; it is a VT450 Vario. In the next few months, the particularly manoeuvrable and powerful Euro-6 turbo diesel machine will increase the effectiveness of the winter service; thanks to its variability, however, the transporter should also be extremely useful for the building yard employees at all other times of the year.
As Bauhof manager Jürgen Stegerer reports, the duty roster for the fight against ice and snow has been in place since October. A total of 24 employees work in shifts to try to complete the priority list as quickly as possible. In addition to two smaller multi-purpose vehicles, six larger ones are now available - including the VT450 Vario mentioned at the beginning. Logically, priority is given to main traffic arteries, school routes, downhill stretches and bridges. When and how many vehicles have to be deployed is decided by the scout, who, depending on the weather forecast, scouts out at 3 or 4 a.m. to find out what the situation is. Last week there were already several occasions for this, and the first missions have already been carried out.
According to Friedrich Gluth, there is a major change in the organisation: the winter service for Burglengenfeld is now again exclusively docked with the municipal utility; the cooperation with private service providers, which stretched over about two decades, has been terminated. "Not because we weren't satisfied with the work!" emphasises Gluth. Despite "excellent experience", cost reasons were ultimately the deciding factor.
